151 Beautiful Cities: #151-#146

151 Beautiful Cities: #151-#146

Hello! As part of our list of the 151 Most Beautiful Cities in the World, which is part of a larger project wherein AWT wants to make mega-lists of all the best parts of travel. So far, we have also made a list of the Top 101 Best Food Cities in the World. To see how we make our lists, click on one of the links above for a description.

However, in these smaller pieces, we want to go a little more in-depth with each of the cities that have made the list. Here we will cover Boston, Massachusetts (151), Granada, Nicaragua (150), Ohrid, North Macedonia (149), Reykjavik, Iceland (148), San Cristobal de las Casas, Mexico (146), and Genoa, Italy (145). Let’s get started!

151. Boston, Massachusetts

One of the most important and historic cities in the United States, Boston is great to visit from late spring to early autumn. Either seeing the flowers bloom or that classic New England autumn leaves. Visit the Freedom Trail, Faneuil Hall Marketplace, the Boston Common (the oldest public park in the US), the North End, Beacon Hill, and Cambridge neighborhoods, the Boston Public Garden near Downtown, one of the many many museums, or catch a ballgame at the famous Fenway Park after a tour of the Sam Adams Brewery.

The Langham, The Ritz-Carlton, and the Mandarin Oriental are all great options to stay. As well, there are plenty of tours to choose from, some including a helicopter ride, a cycle boat tour, or a private walking tour.

150. Granada, Nicaragua

Resting on Lake Nicaragua, Granada is the oldest European city in the Americas — both North and South. This colonial city has an array of colorful streets and is thriving with Latin and Caribbean culture. The city is also known as La Gran Sultana, which is an homage to its Andalusian and Moorish architectural stylings. Omotepe Island is only a small trip away and is a great getaway into untouched nature with little cabanas to stay in. You can also visit Masaya Volcano, which is only a day trip away, and the Masaya Market. There is a tour of more than 350 islets just outside the city which makes for a great afternoon boat ride. In the evening enjoy dinner and one of the many antique restaurants with vibrant music and atmosphere.

The Hotel Dario, Tribal Hotel, and Casa Xanadu all offer great accommodation. As well, you have the option to visit more of Nicaragua with a Ten Day Tour.

149. Ohrid, North Macedonia

Another Lakeside city, this little-known gem is going to be all the rage in no time (probably). Lying on Lake Ohrid, it is known as the Jerusalem of the Balkans for having 365 churches. One for each day of the year, as the locals like to joke. Visit the local bazaar, walk through the old city, tour the city’s ancient fortress, or see an ancient amphitheater, enjoy boat tours around the lake, and take in the local and seasonal foods is a must-do. In end, you should understand why UNESCO made Ohrid one of only 28 places in the world for both culture and nature.

The best places to stay in the city are the Vila Varosh and the Vila Sofija and you can stop here as part of a larger 8-day tour through Albania and Macedonia.

148. Reykjavik, Iceland

Iceland’s capital city is where everyone arrives when coming to see Iceland’s spectacular nature, however, this can leave Reykjavik as an unturned stone. Well, here we want to give where credit is due. For example, a visit to the Harpa Concert Hall will offer ant world-class performance, as will a visit to any number of the local museums, ranging from the Icelandic History Museum, the Kjarval Museum (made for one of Iceland’s most famous artists, Johannes Kjarval), or the National Art Gallery of Iceland. As well, visit the famous Laugavegur, Bankastraeti, Austurstraeti, Laekjargata, and Skolavordustigur shopping streets. Of course, you can walk along the piers, docks, and coast, into the city’s parks, all before finally visiting the stunning Hallgrimskirkja Church.

We suggest a stay at The Reykjavik Edition for the premiere accommodation in the city. As well, if you want to see more of Iceland you can choose from over 100 tours that are available.

147. San Cristobal de Las Casas, Mexico

Located in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas, this mountain highland city is located in a valley aside from the incredible green surroundings and nature the city is laid with cobblestone streets, and buildings holding Baroque, Neoclassical, and Moorish influences. Besides walking the colorful streets, enjoying great food, visiting local markets, and more you can also take trips to San Juan de Chamula and Palenque. San Juan de Chamula is a historic city for the local Mayan descendants and one of the wildest festivals for Carnaval, and Palenque is an ancient Mayan city.

Hotel Bo and Casa de Alma Boutique Hotel are the main recommendations for staying in SCDLC. As well make sure to see what tours of San Cristobal there are. Also, make sure to visit the amber shops and museum. This city is famous for its amber.

146. Genoa, Italy

Located on the Ligurian Sea, Genoa is one of Italy’s most important cities for both beauty and commerce. Originally founded in the 4th or 5th Century, BCE, it is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. In fact, in a visit to the medieval old town, you can stand where the original settlement (or oppidum — an iron age style fortress) was located. Other great spots to see are the Piazza de Ferrari, La Porta Soprana, Villa Durazzo-Pallavicini, the University of Genoa, walk on the Corso Italia, and so much more, and of course, visit the coastal part of the city.

Staying at the Hotel Astoria, the Hotel Palazzo Grillo, or the Splendido, A Belmond Hotel, only a short drive from the city in Portofino. As well, take a specialized tour of the city with your own guide.

All right! That is it for numbers 151-146, we still have a long way to go to cover the rest of the 151 most beautiful cities (that we have for now — we will be making another list). Check in again soon to see more about the next cities on the list, which will be Oxford, UK (141), Algiers, Algeria (142), Rotterdam, Netherlands (143), Sao Paulo, Brazil (144), and Brno, Czechia (145).
