Cuba is a great country to visit not only for the great weather, tasty food, dancing and music, and beautiful views but also because it is a relatively new place for US citizens to able to go. Because it has so been long removed from US travel itineraries means that it is a possibility for an eye-opening experience one cannot get really anywhere else in the world. Whether you are looking for a short getaway or a few weeks, here are some tours of Cuba to look at and get a hint of what there is to experience.
First, is a simple weekend getaway. However, a long weekend, to be sure, the Premium Weekend in Havana by Almaz Journeys is 4 days long a starts with a catered dinner and some activities for the first day (if time permits), the next days are spent walking through Old Havana (UNESCO World Heritage Site), visiting Hemingways Villa, tasting and smoking some of the best rum and cigars the world over, and getting an education on the Communist history in Cuba, among many other things.
Next, also by Almaz Journeys, is the Taste of Cuba tour. This 8-day trip offers all of the above experiences plus travel to the lesser-known cities of Viñales, Cienfuegos, and Trinidad. In Viñales you will explore Cuba’s tobacco country while taking in sights of Cuba’s rural areas. After Viñales, you will arrive at Cienfuegos, known as the ‘Pearl of the South’ where you can walk along the waterfront. Afterward, you will go to Trinidad, which is often considered the prettiest city in Cuba for its pastel-colored houses and quaint feel. Here you can also visit sugar plantations and learn some about Cuba’s pre-Communist history.
Third, the Hola Cuba tour by Intrepid Travel, is 9-days of adventure through Havana, Cienfuegos, and Trinidad in which you will visit Old Havana, Fustelandia — a neighborhood of murals made by artist Jose Fuster, learn about agriculture and farming in Cuba in Cienfuegos, a visit the Che Guevera’s mausoleum, visit a cigar factory, drink locally roasted coffee, and so much more.
Finally, if you are planning a longer trip, you can consider the 22-day Best of Mexico and Cuba tour from Intrepid Travel, which offers everything you see from the ‘Hola Cuba’ tour, plus a whole tour in Mexico. In Mexico, you visit Mexico City, Oaxaca, San Cristobal de las Casas, and the ancient cities of Palenque and Chichen Itza. Here you will be introduced to the history of Mexico’s pre-European Empires, take a Spanish lesson, be led on guided tours, and taste the rich culture of Mexico’s cuisine.
