Colombia is one of the finest countries to find unexplored geographic and historical locations that rival any counterpart in the world.

Check out our photo essay about some of the best places you (might have) never heard of!

This ‘Sea’ is located 45 north of Cartagena de las Indias and gets its color from salt concentration. Other nearby treasures to the Pink Sea are the Rosario Islands, Playa Blanca, Baru, and the famous Mud Volcano of Totomu where you can go for a mud bath before going for a dip in the Caribbean.

There is plenty to do in and around Cartagena, which is why we suggest making this your base for exploring the surrounding areas. The top places we recommend to stay in Cartagena are the Sofitel Legend Santa Clara, Casa San Agustin, Las Islas, Sofitel Baru. Two of these grand locations are located in the old city of Cartagena while another two are a short drive to the beach of Baru, a pristine azure coast.

Cartagena is such a magical city that just being there is already enough. You can walk around the city for days, revisiting the same streets and parks and never getting tired of the sights. And for a great view of the city, you can visit the San Felipe de Barajas Castle, which has been around since 1657.

For dining options, there are many many great places that offer local fare among classical Colombian dishes, but as well for those looking for international cuisine or fusion, all taste buds can be satisfied. For local favorites look for Mojarra, Empanadas Colombianas, Tres Leches Cake, and of course — Ceviche!

As well, aside from the Pink Sea, there are several day trips that are well worth a visit from Cartagena. There is the Isla de San Bernadino — with its House in the water, Bocagrande — which is the new city center of Cartagena, Tayrona National Park, and Rosaria Islands — which offer a great boat trip through the Caribbean.

And, this is just a small list of all the great things to do in and around Cartagena.
